Learn How You Can Use GitHub Issues to Plan and Track Your Work

GitHub Issues is a powerful tool for organizing, planning, and tracking tasks and ideas in any project. Even if you’re new to GitHub, Issues can help you work efficiently and collaborate with others.

What are GitHub Issues?

  • Issues are like digital sticky notes for your project.
  • You can use them to report bugs, request features, ask questions, or break your work into manageable tasks.

Why Use GitHub Issues?

  • Stay organized: Keep track of what needs to be done and what’s in progress.
  • Collaborate easily: Assign tasks, leave comments, and mention teammates.
  • Document decisions: Record discussions and solutions for future reference.
  • Track progress: Close issues when tasks are complete and see your project's evolution.

How to Get Started

  1. Go to your repository’s "Issues" tab.
    - At the top of your project page, click “Issues.”

  2. Create a new issue.
    - Click the green “New issue” button.
    - Write a clear title and description of your task, problem, or idea.
    - Optionally, assign the issue to someone, add labels (like bug, help wanted, or enhancement), or link to related issues.

  3. Discuss and update.
    - Anyone can comment to share progress, ask for help, or suggest solutions.
    - You can edit the issue to update its status or add information.

  4. Close the issue when done.
    - Once the task is completed or the question is answered, click “Close issue.”

Tips for Using Issues Effectively

  • Use descriptive titles so everyone understands the issue at a glance.
  • Break large tasks into smaller issues.
  • Use labels and assignees to organize and prioritize.
  • Link issues to pull requests to connect code changes directly to work items.
